CRITICAL COMMENTARY ON TIRUVACHAKAM ** AN APPRECIATION BY TIRUVACHAKAMANI K. M. Balasubramaniam, B. A., B. L., (Translator of Tirukkural and Tiruvachakam into English verse) **************** Sanganool Chelvar", **Pandithamani " aiva Thiru, A rulampalavanar of Jaffna is the scholarly and competent author of an excellent edition of Saint Manickavachakar's superb and sublime Tiruvachakam, with his critical notes and commentary. Tiruvachakam is the magnum opus of the Saint and the soul - melting hymnology of Saivism. The first part of this commentary was published in 1967, sometime after the author's unfortunate and premature demise. Now, the second part is coming out. I have had the divine pleasure of perusing both the parts of this delectable publication. Apart from the English translations of Tiruvachakam by Dr. G. V: Pope, Mr. G. V. Pillai and my humble self, there are in existence a good num- ber of Tamil editions of Tiruvachakam with notes and com- thents. There is an old edition whose author's name is un- known. The late Mr. K. Subramania Pillai's simple notes are helpful to the beginners. The late Marai Malai Adigal's Com- mentary on the first four Ahavals is competent and classical. The late Pandithamani M. Kathiresan Chettiar's rather elaborate notes and comments for a few chapters had been the best of its kind till now. The edition of Tiruvachakam and Tiruk- kovaiyar together published by the famous Dharmapura Adinam
