Making Everyone to Dance
These three are called as malas or impurities
which, as chains make human beings centre around
worldly attractions leading to afflicitons. Only those
who can realize the truth that these three impure
elements must be transmuted as positive and pure
entities can triumph over the ordeals in life. To quote
a Thevaaram hymn,
Mouth is to praise and ignoble heart to think, and
Head to bow are given by the Lord for whom
Seldom do I offer fresh fragrant flowers and adore
My vinai for a long time has fallen me
The Thiurvaasagam hymn elucidates the role
of Lord Siva, the cosmic dancer in making every one
dance to the tunes of egotism.
Becomes the Lord as the sky, earth, air, fire
Flesh, life, truth and non-truth
He who makes every one dance as 'l' and 'mine'
How can I praise you, who assumes such a form?
The same text informs that hundred crores of
maaya sakthigal (the powers of delusion) are
operative in the universe perpetuated by the
powerful Lord Supreme. People out of ignorance
caused by desire pay undue importance to the
insignificant features of the empirical world and cling
fast to their momentary pleasures and are contented
with them. Seldom do they realize that there is an
abiding and everlasting joy, which can be experienced
when Lord Siva is made to dwell in the psycho-
physical organism permanently. Now the question
arises as to how one can eliminate the evil influence
of the impurities and bring Siva into one's being?
The Saiva siddhanta scholars declare that the
impurities or paassam are also as eternal as Pati or
Siva and Pasu or the soul. It is clear that they cannot
be totally destroyed and if they continue forever, then
liberation or mukthi is not possible. The Siddhantins
advocate a unique method called canalization (L0600f)
LOTTMM) i.e., ego or aanavam must be treated as 'I,
not i, but God in me.' One should feel proud that he
become the PERSON of Siva (). As St. Appar
calls {இறுமாந்திருப்பன் கொலோ) -'I have the pride
that I am counted by one among the celestials of
Siva.' The second impurity viz., karma or action must
be performed required fruits. All action hitherto done
in a selfish manner must be performed in Siva -
centred ways. It would be appropriate here to quote
a few verses from the Siddhanta texts. According to
Thiruvundhiyaar,
"After relinquishing personal thoughts and acts
and even forgetting our own self-consciousness, the
benevolent Lord accepted our actions as His actions,
as a responsible person He offered His abundant
grace".
Sivajnana Bodham says:
"The moment I stood with single-mindedness
or oneness of consciousness and realized the Holy
Feet of Siva (i.e., the Lord and myself were
inseparably united as one), the benign Lord revealed
Himself as genuine experience in me."
The Saivites must realize the most pertinent
as well as prominent truth that it is the Grace of Siva
that sustains us every moment. To those who
establish outward relationship with Siva and to those
who develop inward relationship, His grace is the
common factor. At the external relation, grace is
understood very little whereas in the internal
relationship grace is experienced incessantly. How
is grace explained in Saiva philosophy? To quote
Sivajnana Bodham,

Grace and Siva Inseperable
Grace and Siva are inseparable. Grace is
eternal and beginningless. It is this grace which
annihilates the pasutva (worldly experience) to the
souls grants Sivattva (true nature of Siva) which is
