A UNIVERSAL PRAYER
Professor Kopan Mahadeva
God, give me elephant's ears to hear only what is right
And eagle's eyes to see well, all that is worthy of sight
A big-enough heart, not to harass those who do me wrong
Puppies' tails-like smiles to show men love, to belong
A nose like the dolphins' with a keen sense of direction
Einstein's imagination, Gandhi's skill of passive action
Unfailing strength in my frame, a controlled tongue
Rocky faith to climb life's noble ladders, rung by rung
A mind, always alert and productive, even in sleep,
Hundred-odd years of life, and some wealth to keep.
God, I ask for all these things only to serve needy folk
With loving mates who work, not those who merely talk.
Please make me, when I do speak, to pleasantly speak.
And, God, never let me harm anyone, especially the weak.
Use me as your tool for good deeds, as you would, please,
And make me forgive others' faults with dignity and ease.
God, lend me some radiance to light a bit of this earth
And give me, each living day, a life of order and worth.
When all is done, Dear God, I beg you, to come forth
And let me embrace your feet in an instant of mirth.
SHOW ME THE WAY
Almighty, Siva,
perched in the heaven
inside my head:
To you I pray
many times a day.
All that I say
whenever I pray
Please, Almighty,
Show Me The Way.
is:
I'll do the walking or the stalking
and the carrying or the ferrying
and the sweating and the wiping
and the searching and the learning
and the herding and the pleading
and everything else...
but all I ask,
to do
my
task
is: Show Me The Way.
176
You are my guide
my only guide,
perched in the heaven
inside my head.
So, heed me.
Do lead me.
If I go astray,
You chide me
but guide me
unflaggingly
on the right way.
Almighty, who is
perched in the heaven
inside my head,
please make me see
all along the way
to my destiny.
